GH is, as far as we know, diagnosed in about 3000-5000 people in Denmark. Unfortunately this is often too late when damage has already occurred. In most cases General Practitioners (GPs) refer patients to specialists at the gastroenterology departments at the hospitals for evaluation, genetic testing and treatment. Knowledge about haemochromatosis is limited among GPs .

It is estimated that 1 in 250 ethnic Danes carry the risk of developing haemochromatosis which equates to around 20,000 people.

Most patients already diagnosed are cared for by GP´s, however in some cases at the hospital clinics. Phlebotomy and blood testing is in most cases done at hospitals.
