The Haemochromatosis Arthropathy Research Initiative (HARI) is an international consortium of clinicians, researchers and patient representatives, dedicated to improving care for those affected by haemochromatosis arthropathy. The project is led by Professor Patrick Kiely, Consultant Rheumatologist and Professor of Practice in Clinical Rheumatology (pictured below).
Its primary focuses are patient and doctor education, driving research into disease mechanisms and championing improvements in clinical documentation.
What is haemochromatosis arthropathy?
Haemochromatosis arthropathy is a painful joint disease which affects up to 87%* of people with haemochromatosis. It results in progressive thinning and loss of joint cartilage, bone bruising, and new bone growth around joints.
The HARI therapeutic recommendations
In 2018, HARI published comprehensive treatment guidelines covering pharmacological, non-pharmacological, and surgical interventions, marking a key milestone for those with haemochromatosis arthropathy.
These guidelines are currently available in Italian, Danish, and English and can be downloaded below.
