APH, founded in 2003, focuses on preventing this disease through outreach to healthcare professionals and the public, and with the participation of patients as active partners.
A APH, fundada em 2003, centra-se na prevenção desta doença através da divulgação junto dos profissionais de saúde e da sociedade, com a participação dos doentes como parceiros ativos.
1 in every 200-500 Portuguese people is at risk of having the disease.
The Hemochromatosis Clinic at the Santo António Local Health Unit is a specialized referral clinic for the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of hemochromatosis. The clinic is at the Santo António Local Health Unit, Rua D. Manuel II (ex-CICAP) in Porto.
APH plays a very important role in clarifying and referring patients. We have achievements of which we are very proud, including the official institution of a National Hemochromatosis Day (June 7th), publication of a booklet with relevant information for patients and families, integration of the Hemochromatosis theme into the Porto Editora textbook “Viva a Terra 9” – Natural Sciences, active participation in Haemochromatosis International and EFAPH, as a Founding Member of RD-Portugal (Union of Associations of Rare Diseases of Portugal, and much more.
We organize training meetings for doctors in several municipalities in the north of the country, and every year since 2012, as part of the World Hemochromatosis Week and National Hemochromatosis Day celebrations, we choose a city where we hold a gathering of members and friends. Our goal is not only to disseminate information about hemochromatosis among the local population, but also to celebrate the spirit of friendship and solidarity among members.
