Margaret Mullett B.A., B.Sc. H Dip
Chairperson of the Irish Haemochromatosis Association for 20 years, board member of the IBTS 2006-2009
I became passionate, some might even say obsessed, about raising awareness of haemochromatosis after my husband, George’s death. I was very lucky to have been married to Dr. George Mullett for over thirty years. He was an exceptional man in every way. Very sadly and all within six weeks he was diagnosed with haemochromatosis and died awaiting a heart transplant in the Mater Hospital, Dublin in June 2000. As it transpired, I was also diagnosed with haemochromatosis and so were our five adult children. George saved our lives. This is why early diagnosis is critical. My mission for over 20 years is to ensure that no one goes undiagnosed or untreated with haemochromatosis. As a voluntary Board Director and former Chair of the Irish Haemochromatosis Association, I have had the opportunity to work with fantastic board members and amazing volunteers. We continue to raise awareness of Ireland’s most common genetic disorder, through information evenings and events, online webinars and providing a helpline, information and support for people with haemochromatosis and their families.
